How to test a business backup before you need it

Prepared by ITEXPERT · Published

A successful backup job does not prove that the business can recover. ITEXPERT helps scope backups and recovery around the systems your team uses. A restore test checks whether the right data can be recovered to an approved environment, whether the application works and how long the complete process takes.

A practical checklist for your team

How to test a business backup before you need it: evaluation record
WorkloadInclude in the testEvidence to retain
Shared filesRestore an agreed sample, including permissions and the folder structure users need.Open the recovered files using an appropriate test account; record missing files and permission differences.
Odoo ERPRestore the database and matching filestore, with the application version, required modules and configuration.Use an isolated instance to check agreed records and attachments; prevent test emails, integrations and scheduled jobs from acting on live systems.
Server or virtual machineRecover the operating system, application configuration and dependencies, rather than only a data folder.Record boot, login, application checks and any manual recovery steps.
Business continuityTest the people, credentials, recovery instructions and replacement capacity needed to use the restored system.Record when a business owner confirms that the agreed workflow is usable.

Agree the recovery point and recovery time

Recovery point objective (RPO) is the amount of recent data the business can afford to lose. Recovery time objective (RTO) is the target time to restore an agreed service. Neither follows automatically from a daily backup schedule. Choose targets per workload and compare the recovered point and measured recovery time with those targets.

Run the restore away from production

Choose an isolated test environment, an approved backup set and a named technical owner. Disable outbound integrations and scheduled jobs before starting the restored application. Do not overwrite the live system to demonstrate that a backup works.

Measure the whole recovery

Start the clock at the agreed incident or recovery-request point. Include access approval, retrieving the backup, preparing infrastructure, restoring dependencies and business verification. Record technical restore completion separately from the time the service becomes usable.

Keep an actionable recovery record

Record the workload, backup identifier, recovery point, start and finish times, checks performed, business approver, problems and assigned fixes. Retest failed checks. Agree the next test date and events that require another test, such as an application migration or changed storage.

Questions before you begin

Is a completed backup job enough?

No. It shows that the backup process reported completion. A restore test provides evidence that an agreed set of data and applications can be recovered and used.

What should an Odoo recovery test include?

Include the database and its matching filestore, required application version, modules and configuration. Verify agreed records, permissions and attachments in isolation, with live integrations disabled.

How often should a business test restores?

Choose a schedule based on business impact, data changes, system complexity and contractual requirements. Also test after material changes to applications, infrastructure or the recovery process.
